UPDATED: 3.0M Earthquake in Eagle Ford Shale

February 4, 2012 By TXsharon

I’m in the Eagle Ford Shale today where they just had an earthquake. It’s in one of the heaviest areas of drilling.

Event Page

Update: More information about that earthquake:

This quake was in the same general area of the 3.3M quake in November and the 4.8M quake in October.

It was 3.1 miles deep. Here are the depths of a few wells in Karnes County

  • 11,500 ft (2.17 miles) – EOG
  • 15,809 ft (2.99 miles) – Riley Exploration
  • 16,847 ft (3.1 miles) – Hilcorp Energy

Look, lady, I don’t know how many times I have to say it…earthquakes have been around for millions of years, hydraulic fracturing has nothing to do with earthquakes anymore than injection wells do. Now move along, will ya?

Okay. Okay. I quake in the face of your brillance.

Matt maybe you ment to say hydraulic fracturing has been around for millions of years? “U.S. Government Confirms Link Between Earthquakes and Hydraulic Fracturing” http://oilprice.com/Energy/Natural-Gas/U.S.-Government-Confirms-Link-Between-Earthquakes-and-Hydraulic-Fracturing.html
I don’t know if I trust the source, ” OILPRICE.COM The No1 source for oil and energy news”

BlueDaze–your updated data speaks fracking loudly!
There is a connection between earthquakes and fracking and injection wells.

The well depths given are horizontal wells so that will not be thier vertical depth. It’s deceptive to compare measured depth and vertical depth.

Still, Katy, more than likely what will be shown, when the dust settles, is that frack fluid acts as a lubricant along the fault lines and causes an earthquake. The proximity to faultlines is the most relevant and whether the frack fluid entered the faultline and caused slippage.

Well Katy, give us the drilled “vertical depths” and the source of such depths. And state if these depths are certified measured after drilling depths from appropriate well logs. Also tell us if these wells have been fracked, when and how many times, etc. Also the known fracture extent, up down or sideways from the induction point.

Actually, why does Katy need to come up with accurate statistics for this article… shoudln’t the author do that instead? She’s right, the vertical depth is nowhere near the 3.1 miles deep.

Oh and “act as a lubricant”? You’re kidding right?

Anyway to help anonymous and the author who clearly needs help finding pertinent information:
