Groups to mark Gulf Oil Spill anniversary with direct action against fossil fuel extraction.

On April 20th dozens of environmental, climate, and social justice groups will target government and corporate operations with protests and civil disobedience in an International Day of Direct Action Against Extraction being organized by Rising Tide North America. The protests will commemorate the one year anniversary of BP’s Gulf Oil Disaster by demanding an end to the environmental destruction and climate destabilization created by fossil fuel and other extractive industries.

“The Gulf Oil Disaster was the worst manifestation of the disasters that are created by extractive industries on a daily basis” said Matt Wilkerson of Rising Tide North America. “Communities around the world are terrorized by corporate and state ventures to extract fossil fuels. On top of poisoning our water and polluting our air, extractive industries are at the root of our climate crisis. If we have any hope of averting the worst affects of climate change we must leave fossil fuels in the ground.”

North Texas Unites to End Natural Gas Drilling

On April 20th at 5:00PM Rising Tide North Texas will be hosting a march and rally in downtown Fort Worth to bring the people’s demands to the front door of the worst and most brazen polluter in North Texas; Range Resources. Not only does range resources operate thousands of polluting wells across North Texas [remember DoodyGate] and Pennsylvania, but is refusing to comply with the EPA’s order to provide water for Weatherford families whose well water the company contaminated.

The data undeniably proves that hydraulic fracturing in North Texas is causing unimaginable levels of cancer-causing air pollution, is putting toxic chemicals into our groundwater that may never be possible to clean and is causing illness and deflated property values for families and homeowners.

Join us at the corner of E 2nd St and Main St to make Range Resources, our industry-backed politicians and all gas drillers hear our demand that this toxic, destructive and economically unnecessary practice must end immediately, lest we sell the future of our region for the short-term profits of a few rich men. We invite all groups and individuals in North Texas that oppose hydraulic fracturing to unite with us on April 20th transform our individual campaigns into a unified, region-wide voice.

Worldwide Action

The day of action will feature protests by Gulf Coast residents fighting offshore drilling, Appalachians resisting mountaintop removal coal mining, Pennsylvania and New York residents opposing natural gas hydro-fracking, Canadians fighting tar sands mining in Alberta, as well as other community groups engaged in fights against extractive industries. Protests are also planned for the UK, New Zealand, and Australia.

The day of action also seeks to highlight the ruthless manner in which extractive industries treat workers and the communities they operate in. “These companies come into our communities to make millions off of our natural resources and leave behind nothing but poverty and deadly working conditions,” said Carling Sothoron of Rising Tide North America. “The 11 workers who died on BP’s oil rig and the 29 who perished in Massey Energy’s Upper Big Branch coal mine were killed by the same thing; corporate greed. These deaths are not accidents. They are the direct result of these companies cutting corners in pursuit of profit.”

The day of action will see protests aimed at disrupting business at work sites and offices in order to get the message across. “Our political leaders are those who profit from the status quo, and the only way they will ever stand up to their corporate masters is if we make it absolutely impossible to continue on the path we’re on. Our job is to force our political leaders into a choice between ending the war against the living or waging it openly by filling the jails with people fighting for a livable future.” Said Tim DeChristopher of Salt Lake City who is facing 10 years in jail for disrupting oil and gas auctions in Utah in 2008.

The day of action demands:

  • An immediate phase out of fossil fuel extraction and a just transition to truly sustainable forms of energy
  • Community control over natural resources
  • Recognizing the sovereignty of indigenous nations and their right to control resources on their lands.
  • Reparations from both state and corporate entities that have profited from extraction in order to fund ecological restoration, full health coverage, and sustainable livelihoods in impacted communities.

Couldn't we just start with the less abstract goal of Ranger admitting liability for their damage and paying for it?

    AMEN!

Thanks to the Big Man Upstairs!

(who by the way, continually is damning us with an increase in natural disasters to express his dissatisfaction with the status quo!!)

Bess, this is a national event so local people don't have control of the message and it's not my event or my message. I'm just announcing it for those who want to go. However, I'm happy to see this group getting involved.

Anonymous 9:43, you're an idiot. I have your IP address now so I'm going to turn it over to the Fort Worth Police. You better hope to hell no one gets shot with a paint gun.

Rising Tide's network is like that of terrorists and drug smugglers, "with many groups actually being leaderless … operating in small, dispersed units that can deploy nimbly — anywhere, anytime. They know how to penetrate and disrupt, as well as elude and evade.

Rising Tide's network is like that of terrorists and drug smugglers…

Article in WashingtonExaminer.com says "Rising Tide's network is like that of terrorists and drug smugglers"

Not sure why anyone would want to have any association with or would promote this group.

So… you're protesting drilling. Ok. What is your solution? What are those sustainable forms of energy so vaguely discussed in the demands? Just wondering what you're really trying to accomplish here. It's like a group of Christians protesting a Marilyn Manson concert. You just look angry and silly and no one is going to want to join your effort. Instead of protesting, why not offer up options and be part of the solution instead of exacerbating the unprecedented tension in our country right now? Just sayin.
