XTO well in Franklin has many problems

December 30, 2010 By TXsharon

Hey Dallas, is this your future?

XTO had some kind of blow out earlier in the month. Now it looks like something is on fire. What’s going on with this well?

I really hope that's just an emergency flare at work. But, if it's a pipeline blow out, will they tell the public? The TRRC pipeline accident database seems worthless.

That's an intentional flare. They drilled into a pocket of gas and their drilling mud is carrying the gas back to the surface. In order to prevent an uncontrolled release of gas or a blowout, they have a device that separates the gas from the mud and the gas is burned in a controlled manner. Because the well is new, and there is no pipeline connection yet, they are not able to sell the gas.

No duh that it's intentional. But it is not necessary. That is a proven field so they should build the pipeline first. Devon does not flare Barnett Shale wells. If they can do it, so can XTO/XOM.
