57 Percent of Americans know hydraulic fracturing

December 22, 2010 By TXsharon

This is progress folks! Congratulations! Your hard work is paying off. Americans are beginning to know what it means to be fracked.

Poll: Fracking for Natural Gas Is No Longer Obscure

The survey (pdf) of 1,012 people conducted Nov. 26-28 by Infogroup/Opinion Research Corp. found that among those who are “very aware” or “somewhat aware,” 69 percent are very or somewhat concerned about water quality issues.

The survey found such concern among members of both major political parties — including 57 percent of Republicans, 74 percent of independents and 86 percent of Democrats.

They equate fracking with the whole process of dirty drilling for natural gas. So, it’s not just the fracking, it’s also the drilling that is a concern.

And they want people to come first according to Treehugger.

72% of people surveyed supported prioritizing water quality and supply over energy production, should they come into conflict. They supported the following statement from CSI: “When it comes to energy production that requires large amounts of water or where water quality is in jeopardy as a result of the energy production, my vote would be for coming down on the side of the public’s health and the environment. We should favor cleaner energy sources that use the least water and involve the lowest possible risk to the public and environment.”

We should get ready for more “EdUkaShUn” from industry and a major ramp up of the PR machine.

“One thing is clear: Our industry must continue to educate communities about the steps we’re taking each day to protect and strengthen the environment while delivering clean-burning, job-creating energy to American consumers,” said Kathryn Klaber, president of Pennsylvania’s Marcellus Shale Coalition.

"57 percent of Republicans, 74 percent of independents and 86 percent of Democrats." – so basically the majority of everyone doesn't like gas producers. I love it when a plan comes together.

I think these water issues are caused by poor concrete jobs and not using the spacers so the pipe rubs together. People have so little trust in the industry because they have been so dishonest so I think hydraulic fracking sounds scary. So much contamination happens close to the surface. Maybe HF is bad but its kind of hard to know for sure. We have pipelines and things leaking close up – why isn't anyone freaking out over that?

The people I talk to use fracking as a generic term for anything to do with drilling and production. I try to explain that they need no be precise about which processes.
