Legacy of UT’s oil wealth: a denuded landscape
Decades after production began, saltwater contamination continues to poison West Texas land.

Millions of barrels of salt water, a byproduct of oil and natural gas production, contaminated 11 square miles, or more than 7,000 acres, killing virtually all vegetation and leaving the land vulnerable to wind and water erosion. Hundreds of mesquite stumps with three feet of exposed roots testify to the dramatic loss of topsoil.

Sharon Wilson is considered a leading citizen expert on the impacts of shale oil and gas extraction. She is the go-to person whether it’s top EPA officials from D.C., national and international news networks, or residents facing the shock of eminent domain and the devastating environmental effects of natural gas development in their backyards.

I believe there is an agenda item at the next council meeting to rename the Town, to "Dirt Mound."
Other possibilities include, "Gas Mound", "Toxic Mound", and "Williams Mound".
