Aruba Petroleum Refuses Simple Step to Improve Barnett Shale Air

November 6, 2009 By TXsharon

Aruba Petroleum is willfully endangering the health of people in Wise County!

This is outrageous considering all the recent media coverage of Barnett Shale air quality.

An update from Christine:

I spoke with the TCEQ today. When they addressed the diesel emission issue with Aruba Petroleum and its proximity to our homes, Aruba didn’t indicate that they would change their unhealthy and inconsiderate practices.

The TCEQ did indicate that the brand of deisel generator being used does have a piece of equipment that could be added to it to reduce emissions but, of course, it is not being used.

I guess even after all of the media attention regarding the dire state of our air quality, Aruba Petroleum still doesn’t care.

    Odd fact:

Wise County has some of the worst air quality in North Texas but the population count as of July 2008 was 58,506.

Denton County's population in July 2008 was 636,557 but their air quality is better than ours?

So much for blaming it on the cars we drive, the gas grills we use etc.

Can someone help me with the math?

Denton County Population 636,557 VOCs 13538

    Wise County Population 58,506
    VOCs 15,582

    Denton 2%
    Wise 27%

But, I'm not sure it translates that way.

It's Environmental Justice. People in Wise County are easier to hoodwink and run over because they are poor and undereducated.

But, your situation changes the face of Environment Justice. Previously when EJ was mentioned, people thought of impoverished, uneducated black or brown people. You have changed the face of EJ. You aren't black or brown. You aren't impoverished. You aren't uneducated. NOW people can see that this can happen to anyone! ANYONE! And, it should happen to NO ONE! Black, brown, white…no one!
