Have We Been Punk’d By Natural Gas?

October 6, 2009 By TXsharon

How can you convince people to risk their vital resources, diminish their quality of live and risk health and safety?

Policy makers have not embraced wide use of natural gas, in part because U.S. production was declining until the recent discoveries.

“In order to promote greater use of natural gas, you’ve got to convince people it’s abundant,” said Newfield Chairman and Chief Executive David Trice, who will serve as chairman of the new coalition. Mr. Trice said he and other industry executives began talking last year about the need for a louder voice in Washington.

How much natural gas do we really have? Are we destroy our planet for only 10 more years of fossil fuel addiction? Is this “clean” energy bridge fuel the biggest Boone-doggle of all?

Notice the last three lines? Total natural gas reserve is 1747.47 TCF. But only 211.09 TCF is proven reserve. The other 1536.38 TCF is unproven and undiscovered natural gas.

How do you even know that part of undiscovered natural gas reserves even actually exist in the first place? Even if it does exist, which could be a long stretch, undiscovered natural gas reserves are irrelevent until they are actually discovered and actually produced.

I believe we are facing a looming North American natural gas crisis. The currently known reserve is going to run out in 10 years. The “undiscovered” reserves of natural gas, assuming they do exist, have not been discovered in more than half a century of North American natural gas exploration activities. What are the odds that they could be discovered in the next 10 years? The odds don’t looking very good. Look at the pace of new natural gas field discoveries in recent years, it surely does not look encouraging at all.

There are millions of years worth of truly clean solar energy available to us. Let's go after them now with the same enthusiasm as dirty gas.

I think there is not as much natural gas as we are being made to believe. I think I remember a year or two ago I read that we might have 2 years of NG. Then I read much more gas was being found. Maybe we had 10 years. Now it seems we have decades of gas? I don't trust the industry. And even if we do have decades of gas, why would we try to get it out as fast as possible while destroying the environment and our health and quality of life in the process? But the possible lies we are being told is really a problem. That should not be allowed. It is so hard to find the truth these days.

Peacegirl you are so correct. Truth is nearly impossible to find from O&G. Below ground is their domain and they guard it with greatest of secrecy! And they don't give a damn about what is on the surface–on the surface, if someone steps in their way, get ready to be run over!
