Liberals Are From Mars, Conservatives Are From Uranus

A new study shows that our brains work differently. Liberals are more open, tolerant of ambiguity and conflict while conservatives are structured and persistent.

Scientists at New York University and UCLA conducted tests on college students ranging from very conservative to very liberal. They tapped a keyboard when the letter M appeared and did not tap when W appeared.

M appeared four times more frequently than W, conditioning participants to press a key in knee-jerk fashion whenever they saw a letter.

Each participant was wired to an electroencephalograph that recorded activity in the anterior cingulate cortex, the part of the brain that detects conflicts between a habitual tendency (pressing a key) and a more appropriate response (not pressing the key). Liberals had more brain activity and made fewer mistakes than conservatives when they saw a W, researchers said. Liberals and conservatives were equally accurate in recognizing M.

It seems that liberals are all about progress or moving forward and conservatives are constipated. 😉 It doesn’t seem too far a stretch to see that the conservative need to preserve the status quo could lend them to be more easily controlled by fear.
