Atmos Cuts Corners. TX Lives at Risk. Brett Shipp Reports

November 2, 2007 By TXsharon

Last night Brett Shipp again reported on the faulty gas line couplings that threaten the lives of Texans. The negligence by Atmos Energy revealed in this report is dramatic!

Watch the video

A citizen, armed with a gas detector, finds leaks left undetected by Atmos Energy. Brett Shipp and WFAA News take viewers to the site of one leak. When soapy water is sprayed onto the leak, the escaping gas causes bubbling at the coupling joint. This is plainly visible on camera.

Brett shows a memo sent to Atmos investors where Atoms brags that their maintenance costs are lower than competitors:

Atmos Maintenance Cost $112/customer Industry Peers Maintenance Cost $218/customer

I’m reminded of the Atmos engineer who, when asked if there is a reason other than cost that the couplings had not been replaced, could only stammer. VIDEO

Later in the segment, Brett again takes viewers to the site of the same leak after Atmos supposedly fixed the leak. This time the reporting is live. The coupling is still leaking gas and, as viewers watch, Brett uses his finger to wipe wet paint off the coupling. Atmos “fixed” the leaking coupling by painting it.

Where is the Texas Railroad Commission on this? In an article in the Star-Telegram, Michale Williams claims the RRC is Watching safety and environment as well as energy.

…we at the commision take seriously our responsibility to provide clean, affordable and reliable energy, to ensure the safety of all Texans and to protect our environment.

The state auditor is charged with making sure that we live up to these responsibilities…

I beg to differ with that! Check the previous reporting below for confirmation. I’ve had no response from Senator Criag Estes on the call for an investigation. Maybe we should suggest an audit of the state auditor.
