When did stupidity become a virtue?

August 25, 2010 By TXsharon

Quote for the day:

“We’ve been attacked by the intelligent, educated segment of the culture.”

– Ray Mummert, a pastor in Dover, Pennsylvania, quoted by Charles P. Pierce in the article Greetings from Idiot America. Pierce is the author of the book Idiot America: How Stupidity Became a Virtue in the Land of the Free.

To answer your rhetorical question with a literal answer, I'd say that stupidity became a virtue in modern times when Newt Gingrich issued his Contract with America. Coincidentally, that was same year the movie Dumb and Dumber came out. I hear that Sarah Palin will star in Dumb and Dumber: The Final Chapter, in 2012.

Stupidity is nothing new, of course, but it's a lot easier to be an elitist than it used to be, especially in Shale-ville.

No political party has a monopoly on stupid, but this is Texas, and you need people on both sides of the aisle to fight what is a stupid idea, urban drilling. I'm no fan of Sarah Palin, but don't bust on the Gingrich. 😉

Is that cognitive dissonance painful? 😉

You can thank Gingrich and his ilk for lack of drilling regulations. Remember, he is the one who wants to shrink government until he can drown it in a bathtub. Then who will regulate drilling in urban areas?

You have to face the fact that we are energy gluttons and the rural area is no longer going to carry your load. If you want to live in huge, energy hog homes, then you better get used to urban drilling. The only way to make it bearable is regulation. =)

How do you think the elections in Flower Mound were won on urban drilling? It wasn't with ONLY democrats voting, most of them were Republicans. Like I said, we need to shed the labels and call a bad idea, a bad idea. Don't poke me in the eye because I'm ***usually*** of a conservative mindset. You might need some of us again on this issue. This is Texas, you are outnumbered without us.

Are you asking me'? Because I've not mentioned any political party and neither has anyone else but you! As you suggested, I am calling a bad idea a bad idea. No regulation and drowning the government is OBVIOUSLY a bad idea.

I don't care to get poked in the eye either so don't even try. I have both my eyes wide open and I will not enable ignorance.

Someone is feeling guilty. If the phoo shits… There was nothing about political parties in this post until anon brought it up. I'm pretty sure TX understands about the Mound's election results. It doesn't change the fact that Gingrich and Sarah Palin are extremists self-serving opportunists no matter what their politics are.

I believe the first post in this thread that brings up 2 clearly Republican individuals set the tone for the thread. If you are going to argue semantics, yes, I typed the word "Republican" first. Wow, chill out, I am on your side, call off the attack dogs. Sheesh, there was a *wink* in there. Everyone is wound up way too tight. I'm out.

The first post brought in 2 clearly Republican individuals with clearly BAD IDEAS. Maybe the fact that they are Republican is a coincidence.

I turn myself inside-out trying to help people. Just last month, I drove all the way over to Grand Prairie for a panel discussion. I didn't get home until after midnight on a work night.

Later I learn that a rumor is circulating in GP that the Barnett Shale is all the fault of Obama's stimulus Plan. WTF???? Are people really that ignorant that they didn't know the Barnett Shale was at it's peak way before Obama?

Now I learn that the rumor is spreading into other areas. The reason that bothers me is 1) it's not true and 2) if we loose the Obama EPA we are totally screwed. If you think that Big Gas isn't completely focused on that and thinking of any way they can make sure we loose this EPA, then I have a really clean bridge fuel to sell you.

That's only one reason I say I will not enable ignorance.
