Gas Well Explodes

July 22, 2009 By TXsharon

A Bass Energy natural gas well in Ohio exploded causing a neighborhood evacuation. This well has had over 20 emergencies in 7 years.

Natural Gas Well Explosion Causes Evacuation
A half dozen homes were evacuated Wednesday shortly after 1 p.m. after a natural gas well owned by Bass Energy Company exploded on the 1000 block of County Road 500 in Nova in northern Ashland County.

Ashland County Emergency Management Agency Director Mark Rafeld said the explosion ignited a small building near the well. The building was a total loss and the pump was damaged.

Ruggles-Troy Township Fire Department responded to the scene and received mutual aid from the Savannah Volunteer Fire Department.

Nova resident Mark Kammer lives next to the natural gas well which he said is a hazard. Kammer said the fire department has been called more 20 times over the past seven years because of problems with the well. He said he would like to see it shutdown.

The state fire marshals office is investigating the incident
