Hydraulic Fracture: Oops! Wrong Formation!

July 13, 2009 By TXsharon

As I’ve mentioned previously, if you listen closely, you will catch Big Gas telling the truth. In the following example, Bill Barrett of Denver-based Bill Barrett Corp. admits that his company’s fracturing has gone in the wrong formation.

Four wells have been fraced and are producing gas, but
Bill Barrett has had troubles with its frac jobs diverting into salt formations
. When that happens, saltwater flows up along with the gas.

Oops!

Again I ask:

What happens when the saltwater flows up along with the gas?

Most Barnett Shale gas wells produce about 100 barrels/day of "produced water" or salt water per Mike Lee article in Star-Telegram.

… oh no no tasty saltwater for me.

The real worry is the permeability of the plugs below the water table.
