April 22, 2010 By TXsharon

It was a blowout that caused the contamination in Louisiana.

Louisiana Well Blowout Forces Hundreds From Homes

These kinds of accidents happen fairly often. See, they really don’t know exactly what’s down there, what they might run into and all the interplays and pathways.

Same area where Chesapeake had that leak that killed the cattle. Dangerous place to live evidently…

I'm certain the communities fears will be allayed when they hear, from their evacuation points, that these incidents are "rare".

I attended a lecture last night sponsored by The Rochester (NY) Committee for Scientific Information and held at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Dr. Richard Young, professor of geological sciences, SUNY Geneseo, spoke on the topic "The Marcellus Shale Formation: Geology Issues." The biggest message I got from his remarks was that no amount of money, no regulations, no agreements, no leases, no nothing can ever insure the outcome of gas drilling because no one, not even the experts, the scientists, no one knows what is down there under the earth's surface. Faults and joints are in the rock. They can't be seen or predicted. Many aren't mapped. These areas are points where fluids can and do migrate, unbeknownst to a driller. There is no way to control drilling fluids once they are put down a well, including injection wells. I think people have the idea that these wells are self-contained repositories. They are not. There are no guarantees no matter how smart everyone is. The speaker last night said he did not think it is wise to drill under these risky conditions.
